The Dean of Students at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Mr. Stephen Frimpong Manso has revealed that, the delay associated with the release of students' results are attributed to a lot of factors which include the large number of part time Lecturers on Campus.
According to the Senior Lecturer, there is a structural problem emerging from this situation, as most lecturers [part time] find it very difficult to manage their activities, eventually forgetting about the early submission of results for students after examination.
He made this known on Monday, February 25, 2018, while commenting on reasons why results of Students are delayed by the Management of the school on Radio GIJ's Morning Dew show.
"There is a structural problem at G.I.J. Most of our Lectures are part time lecturers and it is very difficult [for them] to manage their activities especially because they are not called Staff members. And at times, some of them take the examination scripts and they even forget about it that, they have a duty to perform."
"...By and large, we meet and always say that, they have outstanding results to be declared and it is really a challenge. The challenge I have indicated is that of controlling the part time Lecturers who constitute more than the full time lecturers."
Answering a question as to why part time lecturers on campus are more than the full time lecturers, Mr. Manso asserted that, the situation at hand comes from the slowness of recruitment from the Government.
"Until about six months ago when Government 'freezed' recruitment, we didn't have the authority or order to recruit full time Lecturers. It was about six months ago they (Government) opened the floodgate and they are asking for nineteen slots. And even with the nineteen slots, not everyone are going to be lecturers. Some of them will find themselves in administration and other sectors of G.I.J."
Despite the structural problem to deal with on campus, the Dean of Students has hinted of Management's resolve to 'arrest' this issue as they seek to recruit more full time lecturers.
"From all indications, Management will get additional number of fifty lectures to beef up the number of Lecturers." - He said.
Meanwhile, majority of Students at the Ghana Institute of Journalism are seemingly unhappy with Management's posture in keeping their results for a longer period of time before releasing them, thereby calling on management to find a solution to that effect as soon as possible.
