Some citizens of Aveyime in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region went on the rampage last Thursday and vandalised the police station and the operational vehicle in the area.
The action by the irate youth caused the officers at post to flee for their lives.
Incident
The Volta Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Nana Asomah Hinneh, told the Daily Graphic that the incident occurred during an operation by the police to clamp down on unregistered motorbikes in the town.
According to him, two motorbike riders, apparently incensed by the presence of the police, tried to avoid the law enforcers, but crashed head-on, leading to the death of one of them later at a hospital.
He said the incident generated public outcry, leading to the vandalisation of the police station and their vehicle.
Reinforcement
Nana Hinneh said a police reinforcement had been deployed to the area to maintain law and order and to prevent further destruction of property.
At the time of filing this report, calm had been restored to the town.
Statement
A statement issued by the Police Administration in Accra indicated that the police were closely monitoring the situation and would engage with various community leaders at Aveyime to ensure the restoration of law and order.
The statement, signed by the Director-General of Police in charge of Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr David Eklu, assured the people of Aveyime that the issue would be thoroughly investigated and, therefore appealed for calm.
