Hundreds of newly admitted students of the University of Ghana are complaining of not getting access to residence a few hours after the school opened applications to the various halls of residence.
Few days after students were successfully given admission to the University of Ghana, they were required to make payments of both their academic and residential fees.
This presupposes that the school’s administration gave very little time for guardians and wards of the freshmen to gather enough funds to pay for the university’s exorbitant fees.
Notwithstanding the obvious difficulty that comes with the rush the school puts students in, they were required to register online yesterday 23rd August, 2017 at 10am as announced on the university website.
However, just about 6 hours into the registration, almost all available halls and hostels were occupied.
This has caused a lot of distress and uneasiness amongst the bulk of students who would be reporting to the university from very distant parts of the country without a place to sleep.
One to the disturbed students said he had no idea how she was going to get a room since her parents knew no inside men who could help her secure place.
“I don’t know what to do now. I have no friends and siblings here in Accra. I stay at Koforidua” the fresh student lamented.
This can be said of several other students who cannot afford the exorbitant prices of private hostels off campus. Unfortunately, the other side of this scenario is where middlemen connive with hall tutors to sell the rooms twice its original price.
Reports from continuing students say this trend is not new as it happens every year when new students are admitted into the university.
