Facebook to start hiding friends who post too much from your news feed

Facebook to start hiding friends who post too much from your news feed

Facebook is due to start hiding posts from people who spam users' news feed with clickbait, sensationalised and misinformative articles.

In a statement, the social media giant said it was making the update "to reduce low quality links" in users' news feed.

Facebook said it carried out research which showed that a small group of users were "routinely sharing vast amounts of public posts per day", which was effectively spamming people's feeds.

The study showed that the same people, who were sharing vast amounts of public posts, were also sharing low quality content.

As a result of the research, Facebook said it would "deprioritise" posts being shared from those accounts.

The new policy will only apply to links for individual articles and domains - pages, videos, photos, check-ins or status updates will not be affected.

Facebook said it aimed to make people's news feed more "informative".

It said: "By taking steps like this to improve news feed, we’re able to surface more stories that people find informative and reduce the spread of problematic links such as clickbait, sensationalism and misinformation."

Meanwhile, Facebook is also reported to be rolling out a new Discover tab for Messenger that will make it easier for users to find and engage with brands and chatbots, Business Insider reports.

The tool, which was unveiled during a Facebook conference in April, is part of the company's strategy to make Messenger a go-to communication platforms between users and businesses.

The social network said it wants to make the app more like the Yellow Pages and make it easier for users to get in touch with businesses.

While users will be able to use the Discover tab to "find the businesses they care about", this will also mean businesses will also be able to pester users more easily.

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger may still put user information at risk, claims Study
Do you know that despite the end-to-end encryption provided by popular messaging platforms like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Viber, your sensitive information is vulnerable to hacking?

A research report has highlighted the importance of what is called an 'authentication ceremony' to help mitigate the risk.

Researchers from Brigham Young University (BYU) at Utah in the US found that most users of popular messaging apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Viber are leaving themselves exposed to fraud or hacking because they are unaware of important security options like an 'authentication ceremony'.

READ ALSO » Facebook to start hiding friends who post too much from your news feed

The 'authentication ceremony' is a security practice to ensure the members involved in a communication are authentic. It is done by identifying the message recipient before sending out any sensitive or confidential information.

But because most users are unaware of the 'ceremony' and its importance, "it is possible that a malicious third party or man-in-the-middle attacker can eavesdrop on their conversations", said Elham Vaziripour, Computer Science student at BYU who led the study.

The researchers conducted a two-phase experiment in which they prompted participants to share a credit card number with another participant. Participants were warned about potential threats and encouraged to make sure their messages were confidential.

Only 14 percent of users in the first phase managed to successfully authenticate their recipient. Others opted for ad-hoc security measures like asking their partners for details about a shared experience.

In the second phase, after researchers emphasised the importance of 'authentication ceremonies', 79 percent of users were able to successfully authenticate the other party.

However, the participants averaged 11 minutes to authenticate their partners.

"Once we told people about the authentication ceremonies, most people could do it. But it was not simple, people were frustrated and it took them too long," noted Daniel Zappala, Professor, Computer Science, BYU.

Most people don't invest the time and effort to understand and use these security measures because they don't experience significant security problems. But there's always a risk in online communications.

The researchers are now working to develop a mechanism that makes the 'authentication ceremony' quick and automatic.

"If we can perform the authentication ceremony behind the scenes for users automatically or effortlessly, we can address these problems without necessitating user education," said Vaziripour.

Worst apps for draining battery: Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat among apps killing your phone usage time

Worst apps for draining battery: Facebook, WhatsApp and Snapchat among apps killing your phone usage time
The worst apps for draining your Android smartphone’s battery life have been revealed in a new report.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, highly popular and feature-rich apps including Facebook, Netflix, WhatsApp and Google Maps all feature in the list.

The report, which was put together by Avast, also identifies the worst apps for hogging data traffic, eating into storage and draining overall performance.

You can improve your phone’s battery life by deleting some of the apps you don’t need.

With Facebook, for instance, you can get rid of the app and use the social network in your web browser instead. You’ll have to keep hold of Messenger though.

Switching from Google Docs, one of the worst apps for affecting overall performance, to Microsoft Word could be sensible too.

Some apps, however, can’t be deleted. In this case, Avast recommends limiting notifications from them and reducing background features, refresh intervals and location data usage.

The categories have been split into two lists – one for apps that automatically run at start-up and another for those that you’ll open yourself.

The 10 worst apps for sapping battery life, which automatically run when you turn your phone on, are:

  1. Samsung AllShare
  2. Samsung Security Policy Updates
  3. Beaming Service for Samsung
  4. ChatON Voice & Video Chat
  5. Google Maps
  6. WhatsApp Messenger
  7. Facebook
  8. WeChat
  9. AppLock
  10. DU Battery Saver

The 10 worst apps for draining battery life, which users run themselves, are:

  1. Samsung WatchON
  2. Samsung Video Editor
  3. Netflix
  4. Spotify Music
  5. Snapchat
  6. Clean Master
  7. LINE: Free Calls & Messages
  8. Microsoft Outlook
  9. BBC News
  10. ES File Explorer File Manager

Samsung's built-in Video Editor app has risen up the charts, and requires heavy processing and graphical resources.

Meanwhile, the 10 worst apps for hogging data traffic, which automatically run when you turn your phone on, are:

  1. Facebook
  2. Instagram
  3. Yahoo! Japan
  4. Firefox Browser fast & private
  5. The Weather Channel
  6. WhatsApp Messenger
  7. Google Chrome
  8. DU Battery Saver
  9. Facebook Lite
  10. Google Play Home

The 10 worst apps for hogging data traffic, which users run themselves, are:

  1. Netflix
  2. Spotify Music
  3. Snapchat
  4. BBC News
  5. LINE: Free Calls & Messages
  6. Microsoft Outlook
  7. Clean Master
  8. Samsung WatchON
  9. Amazon for Tablets
  10. PicsArt Photo Studio & Collage

If you're on a limited mobile data plan, the apps listed above are the ones you need to be wary of. Most worrying is the fact that you don't even need to have the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Chrome open for them to munch through your data.

The 10 worst apps for eating into storage, which automatically run when you turn your phone on, are:

  1. Facebook
  2. Instagram
  3. Amazon Kindle
  4. Facebook Messenger
  5. CosmoSia
  6. Google Quick Search Box
  7. Google Maps
  8. Google Chrome
  9. Firefox Browser fast & private
  10. Tango - Free Video Call & Chat

The 10 worst apps for eating into storage, which users run themselves, are:

  1. Spotify Music
  2. Snapchat
  3. LINE: Free Calls & Messages
  4. Samsung Video Editor
  5. SoundCloud - Music & Audio
  6. PicsArt Photo Studio & Collage
  7. Amazon Shopping
  8. BBC News
  9. Clean Master
  10. Photo Grid

Facebook, Instagram, and Kindle are particularly bad because they store local cache files, photos or books, says Avast.

Apps from both Samsung and Google feature heavily in the lists, which may be because both companies’ offerings come pre-installed on a lot of Android devices.

Finally, the 10 worst apps for draining performance, which automatically run when you turn your phone on, are:

  1. Samsung AllShare
  2. ChatON Voice & Video Chat
  3. Samsung Push Service
  4. Google TalkBack
  5. Google Play Music
  6. Google Maps
  7. Google Play Newsstand
  8. Google Plus
  9. ChatON
  10. Google Hangouts

The 10 worst apps for draining performance, which users run themselves, are:

  1. Samsung WatchON
  2. Google Docs
  3. Samsung Media Hub
  4. SHAREit
  5. Samsung Video Editor
  6. Flipboard
  7. Google Text-to-Speech
  8. Clean Master
  9. LINE: Free Calls & Messages
  10. Adobe Acrobat Reader

“For many of us, our smartphones are the main device in our everyday lives. Knowing which of our favourite apps are the hardest-hitting on battery life, data usage, and storage is important so we can manage any that we are regularly using on our phones,” said Gagan Singh, the SVP and GM of mobile business at Avast.

“This quarter’s ‘Most Improved’ accolade is shared between picture messenger tool Snapchat, social media giant Facebook and music streaming behemoth Spotify,” the report says.

“Having previously occupied three of the four top spots for performance-draining apps run by users and on start-up, these companies have made a concerted effort this quarter to improve.”

Uber to engage 1 million female drivers

May 18, 2017 0
Uber to engage 1 million female drivers
Transport technology hub, Uber, has announced plans to rope in a million female driver-partners globally, including Ghana, to empower the women economically.

The initiative, which is expected to be achieved by 2020, is in line with the company’s global commitment to create a gender balance and empower women to benefit from the service.

Addressing the press in Accra, the General Manager of Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr Alon Lits, stated that the company had started partnering with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and female institutions globally to organise seminars to capture the interest of women to join the new technology solution for transportation.

He said, “We realise that the company has been dominated by male driver-partners and we want to create the gender balance and also contribute to the development of women globally.”

Mr Lits added that the company would develop a broader strategy to encourage females to come on board and benefit from the economic opportunities Uber offered.

Driver safety

Mr Lits stated that the company was currently working with a facility and acquiring a product that allowed drivers to get cheaper insurance with some financial institutions in the event of any casualties and injuries incurred during driving.

He said the company’s technology platform was secure and had a platform where all riders (customers) had accounts showing their names, email addresses and phone numbers before they could request for a ride. “So when you accept a request, you’ll know who you’re picking up and so will we,” he explained.

“In many locations around the world, Uber uses technology that anonymises phone numbers to keep contact details confidential. So when you and your rider need to contact each other, your personal information stays private,” he added.

He urged driver-partners to always take extra security measures to ensure safety and prevent passenger attacks.

Mobile money system

Uber had also started talks with telecommunication companies in the country to roll out the Uber mobile money platform, which the general manager said would allow both riders and drivers to make payments in support of a cashless economy.

“This platform will not only benefit riders but driver-partners as well and would most importantly protect the drivers from attacks due to the amount of physical cash they might have on them as they pick passengers,” he said.

Way forward

The manager revealed that Uber would expand its services to Kumasi by the end of September as part of a larger effort to explore potentials in Ghana.

All three TV channels owned and operated by The Multimedia Group, which were being interfered with, have been allowed to continue broadcasting.

The Multmedia radio channels on the Digibox, which were also being interfered with this morning, are back on air.

Joy News, Adom TV and Joy Prime first suffered interferences between the hours of 6 and 7pm Tuesday.

This followed the airing of the promo of Manasseh Azure Awuni’s investigation involving the president.

The three channels are the only ones on the MultiTV digibox which suffered interference. The company’s radio signals on the box were also jammed.
